For this year's Magha Puja  we have conducted a Pha Pa Merit Making Cermony (Pinkama) on Sunday 1st March. All financial donations of the day are dedicated to the New Patio Roof Project.

Total donations on that day alone were $37,567.20 !

Including accumulated funds from previous years, plus donations coming in before and after our Pha Pa, total donations have now reached $192k out of our $250k target (= 87%)

In April we signed a contract with Trueline Patios for $178k (including GST, which we will be able to reclaim). This is by far the best quote we have received since last November, and includes 15 years workmanship garantee & 30 years corrosion garantee for the roof. We will have very strong 200 mm insulated roof panels and steel posts. All the extended effort we put in to find the best company did pay off, as this contract is some $30k less than our previous best offer, and we can now even reduce the target for our fundraiser from $250k to $220k.

With donations reaching $192k, we can already fully cover the signed contract.

However, additional works are required, like:

  • Improvements to rainwater management on existing roofs

  • Eight large high-powered fans

  • Relocating of existing large marquee

  • Two Buddha statues in pediments of porticos, with artistic gable fretwork in background

  • Extension of the existing concrete slab in front of Dhamma Hall.

Therefore, further donations to reach our $220k target are still most helpful and highly appreciated.

Anumodanā for your kind generosity, it's remarkable how your selfless acts of dāna have already covered more than two third of our expected expenses in such a short time!

So modati so pamodati, disvā kamma-visuddhim-attano.

The ones who've done good deeds rejoice,

both now and in their next rebirth;

They're filled with boundless joy as they

experience their karmic purity themselves.

Dhammapada Verse #18

Magha Puja commemorates the occasion when 1,250 Arahant Disciples spontaneously, without any prior announcement, gathered around the Buddha in the Veḷuvana (Bamboo Grove Monastery) in Rājagaha. All of these 1,250 Arahants were ordained by the Buddha personally. The Buddha then recites the famous 'Ovāda-Pāṭimokkha', a summary of the teachings of all Buddhas.

Magha Puja is also known as Sangha Day.

It's an inspiring opportunity for generating good karma (puñña) by supporting the sangha with the four requisites of food, medicines, robes and monastic buildings.
