(Please note, as there's no generally accepted transliteration standard from Thai alphabet to Lating alphabet, you can find Luang Por's name in various spellings: Luang Por Thong Dang, Thong Daeng, Tongdaeng, and so on...)
After the inspiring visit by Luang Por Liem, we were very fortunate to have another highly revered meditation master visiting Dhammagiri only one month later: Luang Por Tongdaeng has kindly accepted our invitation to visit Dhammagiri on the long ANZAC weekend 23-25 April.
Luang Por Tongdaeng Varapañño was born in Sakon Nakhon Province in the Northeast of Thailand in August 1954. He ordained at the young age of 13 as a novice with Luang Por Wan Uttamo. Some time later, he trained in the monastery of Luang Por Waen, Wat Doi Mae Pang. Several novices had to share the tiny space under Luang Por Waen's kuṭi for their accommodation together in crowded conditions, but due to Luang Por Waen's strong mettā, these teenage sāmaṇeras never quarrelled.
After his full ordination as a bhikkhu, Luang Por Tongdaeng's most important teachers were Luang Por Prasit, and Luang Por Plien of Wat Aranyavivek.
(Our long term supporters may remember that Luang Por Plien was the first senior monk visiting Dhammagiri just a few days after we acquired the top property in 2007. He made some amazingly accurate predictions about the future development of Dhammagiri.)
Currently, Luang Por Tongdaeng is the abbot of Wat Doi Phra Jao Ton Luang near Chiang Mai. Ajahn Khantiko ordained and trained with Luang Por at the beginning of his monastic live. Another well known Western disciple of him is German Ajahn Mettiko from Muttodaya Monastery.
Luang Por has already visited Dhammagiri once in June 2010. He liked the monastery and it's environment vey much, and we're looking forward to show him the development over the last 13 years.
Luang Por will be accompanied by Ajahn Moshe, who has many years experience in assisting Senior Ajahns on their international travels, including fluid interpreting Thai/English.
